Record-low Rhine levels cut barge loads, drive up freight rates

Water levels on Germany’s Rhine River fell to their lowest July level in decades amid heatwaves and drought, forcing barges to reduce loads and driving up freight rates, Yahoo Finance reports, citing The Telegraph. Traders told Bloomberg that vessels were carrying as little as one-fifth of their normal cargo capacity, threatening the chemicals sector and shipments of petrol, diesel and jet fuel.
